See how the Asia West Pacific Section celebrated World Quaker Day in 2022
Bohol Quakers celebrated World Quaker Day in a pocket forest and permaculture farm in the midst of the city; striving to become Quakers who care for the Earth, care for people and share resources.
Friends in Dunedin marked World Quaker Day on Sunday 2 October with posters in several Asian languages, and a display of books on Friends worldwide.
After our time of worship we received greetings from our partner Meeting in Bhopal, India, and learnt with pleasure that Friends Girls School in Sohagpur has just opened a new classroom block. (Joyful photos are already on the World Quaker Day website.)
After the close of Meeting we told stories of encounters with Friends in numerous places. It was good to be able to share our diverse experiences.
To mark World Quaker Day, Friends Girls School Sohagpur in India held a grand opening of a newly constructed building and Friends English Medium Play School. Members of the Governing Board, retired Principals, staff of the school and past and present students blessed this occasion with their presence.
Friends from Osaka, Japan together with Friends from Northern Monthly Meeting in Aotearoa / New Zealand celebrated World Quaker Day 2022 by worshipping together online. They met for 30 minutes of silent worship followed by 30 minutes of fellowship. They held a short discussion about the place of silence in their lives and shared some information about peace initiatives in Aotearoa.
It was a joy for Wellington Friends Meeting to share their Meeting for Worship with Friends from Piedmont Yearly Meeting on World Quaker Day. While in Aotearoa / New Zealand it was our normal meeting time, 10:30 on Sunday morning, in North Carolina it was Saturday evening at 5:30pm. We were not certain it would happen. North Carolina had just experienced a hurricane that caused power outages and fierce winds and rain across the state.
Though few in number we were happy that a dozen folks had the electric power working and were able to join us on Zoom. Messages were shared, as were concerns for those struggling with the tragic loss of loved ones and the horrendous loss of property in Florida, South Carolina and Georgia.
After introductions of both those attending Wellington’s Meeting for Worship and those attending in the United States, we were able to have fellowship on Zoom. We invited them to join us any time now that they had our Zoom details.
The photograph is of a poster made by Junior Young Friends when they gathered in Wellington.
